About this Unit

Computing, data collection, and data analysis are an essential part of a contemporary scientist’s toolkit. In this unit, students will learn about the collection, storage, manipulation, interrogation, analysis and presentation of scientific data using contemporary computing environments. In the first part of the unit, the emphasis will be on using Microsoft Excel to store, manipulate, and display data. In the second part, students will be introduced to the visualisation and analysis of large scientific datasets using R (programming language), a contemporary statistical environment. Using both these computing environments, students will also learn descriptive and inferential methods that they will require to draw conclusions from scientific data, along with tools and techniques that will allow them to communicate their findings in a manner appropriate to scientific reports, articles, dissertations, and other modes of communication.
