About this Unit

This unit covers the role that the Earth’s gravity field plays in geodetic surveying and the gravity-related corrections that are applied to surveying measurements. It defines the anomalous and normal gravity fields and how these are used to compute the geoid via Stokes’s solution of the geodetic boundary-value problem. It covers the subtleties of heights and how they are affected by gravity. It describes the dynamics of the solid Earth and how these time variations affect modern reference frames. General and special relativistic effects on surveying measurements are also covered.
