About this Unit

This unit provides an introduction to geodesy, the study of the shape (and gravity field) of the Earth. It covers coordinate systems, both on a plane and on the surface of a sphere or ellipsoid in two dimensions, and three dimensional coordinates referenced to the centre of the Earth. You will also study the methods to transform between the various types of coordinate systems. The unit also covers the definitions of horizontal and vertical datums, and introduces the geoid, a surface approximating mean sea level that is used to define heights. You will learn about map projections, with focus upon the Map Grid of Australia (MGA), the projection used in Australia, and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), a similar projection but used globally.
