About this Unit

This unit covers the basic principles and practice of metallurgical process and plant design. Working in groups, students will be provided with a project brief consisting of essential mineralogical and metallurgical data for a particular ore body and a design brief specifying the various design tasks that they need to carry out. These include process selection, software-assisted process development and optimisation, equipment selection and sizing, plant layout, process control scheme, cost estimation and assessment of the economic feasibility of the project. Occupational health and safety, environmental impact, sustainability and social impact issues need to be considered at every step of the design process.
