About this Unit

This unit introduces the fundamental concepts of relevant theories, history and practice development that relate to nursing. The unit provides an introduction to communication, reflective practice, a systematic process approach, scope of practice and decision making frameworks in an interprofessional context. Students are introduced to medication mathematics and applied pharmacology. There is a focus on fundamental and core principles of patient care based on current best practice, quality outcomes, self care/independence relating to person-centred care and primary health care and the reciprocal relationship between physical and mental health. There is a focus on physical and mental wellbeing and cultural perspectives and considerations for care. Core skills include health assessment; hand hygiene; standard precautions and non-touch-techniques, simple wound dressing, manual handling, end of life care, professional communication and cultural safety. Professional competence and regulatory practice are developed according to the requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), Australian Nurses and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
