About this Unit

This unit provides students with the capabilities needed to select an appropriate mining method, together with associated equipment, technology and infrastructure, for a given resource mineralisation and location. The unit presents the principles, design and application of major surface and underground mining methods, including consideration of cost and productivity aspects, safety implications, environmental and social management issues, and other risks. The unit also covers equipment selection and infrastructure and technology requirements, including emerging technologies such as automation and remote operation. Students will engage with mining operations-related problems using authentic data sets and will be required to participate in up to 2 days of fieldwork activities.
