About this Unit

The unit is designed for students to develop a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted aspects of mental health care in acute settings. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, students will explore the structure, policies, and standards guiding acute mental health services in Australia, gain insights into diagnostic systems, therapeutic alliance, case management, and legal and ethical considerations. Emphasis will be placed on the lived experience and the recovery framework, recognizing the importance of holistic care in addressing co-occurring chronic diseases and complex social issues. Students will be introduced to psychopharmacology for low prevalence disorders and assisted to navigate personal and professional challenges they may encounter in mental health settings.
