About this Unit

This unit is designed to introduce students to knowledge, skills and attitudes related to mental health and wellbeing in the context of primary health care. The social determinants of mental health, resilience and wellbeing and mental health promotion and early intervention will be explored and discussed. Using an evidence-based approach, the unit will focus on developing an understanding of the prevalence of mental health issues in the community, the connection between physical and psychosocial wellbeing, the impact of co-occurring substance use and eating disorders and the importance of cultural considerations. The specific mental health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, and LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) populations will be explored.
