About this Unit

The Integrated mechanical design (IMD) unit includes the design and processes involved in solving the mechanical engineering problems such as need identification, problem definition, concept generation and evaluation. The concepts of team building and leadership in industrial projects, organizational and behavior issues will be taught and practiced in the design and evaluation process. For solving the engineering problems, application of modern design tools used in the industry such as SolidWorks and ANSYS will be introduced in this unit, and the theory of the assembly design practices and guidelines for engineering manufacturing processes will be discussed. This will be followed by the design process for additive manufacturing and 3D printing and the need of rapid prototyping. In addition to design and modelling process, students will be exposed on how the engineering design decisions are influenced by the social and economic considerations, health, safety, and environment (HSE) considerations, professional ethics, life cycle thinking and circular economy. The failures in engineering due to deficient design, imperfections in base metals, improper manufacturing, poor assembly and service will be discussed to make the students aware of the need of design for reliability and quality, approaches to robust design. Finally, students will be trained on effective business pitch and technical presentation.
