About this Unit

Students undertake a significant research project that either develops new knowledge or addresses an engineering problem of interest. Students are free to choose from a range of projects offered by the faculty members as well as by external partners. In this unit students will: identify a problem, propose and plan a solution that meets the requirements, do a literature review to investigate existing solutions, make design decisions and assumptions to develop their solution, keep a logbook, and submit a written progress report at the end of semester. Projects involve engineering research methodologies, including analytical, numerical or experimental investigation or design, carried out over a period of one year. The students submit their final project work in the form of an undergraduate thesis at the end of the subsequent unit Mechanical Engineering Research Project 2.
