About this Unit

Media use as a health communication / health promotion strategy. The measurable impact on public health of: news reporting (e.g. causes of death, celebrity diagnoses); advertising of unhealthy products (e.g. tobacco, alcohol, junk food); entertainment programming (e.g. representation of violence, mental health and suicide on TV); and entertainment-education. Health communication via: social and online media; mass media (e.g. newspapers, TV, radio); folk media (e.g. theatre, song); and limited reach media (e.g. pamphlets, posters). How to plan, develop, test, implement and evaluate health communication media. Getting to know your audience. Co-design with your audience. Literacy, health literacy and media literacy. Unintended media effects, misinformation and disinformation. Marketing and social marketing. Managing a social marketing campaign. Advocacy and media advocacy strategies: planning and implementation. Giving interviews, writing media releases and working with journalists.
