About this Unit

Designers should have a clear understanding and appreciation of the history of design, its development, theories and the major movements that have influenced its Evolution, and their reflection on human culture. The past informs the future and the ability to develop responsive designs requires creative opportunities and problems solving skills grounded in the lessons from the past. This unit will explore the historical and cultural practices underpinnings of the broader discipline area of design and enable you to develop and appreciation of its interconnectedness with social, political, cultural and economic issues of the Modern period to date. Learners will learn about the emergence of ‘Design’ as a field of practice and historical study through a thematic and chronological look at the past and present, covering ideas and concepts emergent from Design’s relationship with ideologies, technologies, materials, and human interactions.
