About this Unit

This unit is based on six themes - professional, leader, advocate, clinician, educator, and scholar. Teaching in all these themes is provided within the rural clinical attachments and related teaching in Year 4 of the B-MBBS course. This consists of student attachments to rural medical practitioners and includes exposure to, and practice in, a variety of clinical disciplines including, but not restricted to, surgery, psychiatry, internal medicine, general practice, ophthalmology, paediatrics and child health, and women's and infants' health. Students undertake clinical care of patients under the supervision of experienced clinicians in a real rural clinical environment, including ward rounds, operating theatre, outpatient clinics, emergency department attachments, community practices, and other clinical encounters. Students engage in small group learning sessions to discuss evidence-based practice in related clinical disciplines in rural health contexts. Students are expected to apply the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes gained in a rural context. Specifically, they will develop skills in diagnosis and management of common clinical problems; skills related to patient interaction, physical examinations and performing procedures in various clinical disciplines will be developed.Communication and clinical skills learned in previous years are extended further and applied within the rural clinical setting.
