About this Unit

In this unit students extend their understanding of the human body and the pathophysiology of human disease at the individual, societal and global levels.Normal anatomy and physiology, pathological processes and disease manifestation, psychosocial factors, public health, principles of evidence-based practice, professionalism, ethical and legal considerations and rural Indigenous health are studied in an integrated manner through the exploration of clinical cases and interactive supportive seminars. Self-directed and peer led learning are complemented by expert guidance. Communication skills, clinical examination and procedural skills are taught alongside the scientific content.The first half of the year addresses in detail the Gastrointestinal system, Musculoskeletal system, and the Neurological system including Psychiatry.The second half of the year provides the opportunity for integrated extension and spaced revision of cumulative content.Professional behaviours and awareness and strategies for personal well-being appropriate to the medical workforce are also fostered, and observational placement opportunities within allied health and clinical settings complement the structured content, forming a sound base for the transition to clinical practice.
