About this Unit

This unit provides a basic introduction to geological maps and stratigraphy, which will be followed by field-based practical geological mapping exercises on the field trip. Skills developed include field geological mapping using aerial photographs, meticulous and comprehensive documentation of observations in field notebooks, and measurement of structural data using a compass clinometer. Work-integrated learning aspects of the unit include the development of a professional attitude to field safety and field camp organisation, and an appreciation of the importance and meaning of rocks in indigenous culture.
