About this Unit

This unit will provide students with a comprehensive overview of the physics of multiphase flow in porous media and their relevance and applications in various real-life situations. The unit begins with a detailed discussion of Darcy’s Law and applications, wettability, interfacial phenomenon, capillary pressure, gravity effects, relative permeabilities and residual saturations. The implications of these basic but important concepts for fluid distribution in porous media for a range of scenarios -such as oil and gas extraction and CO2 geo-sequestration, will also be discussed. The unit will then present a more detailed discussion of the dynamics of fluid flow in porous media by introducing and solving Radial Diffusivity Equation (RDE) under a series of realistic conditions relevant to the extraction/injection of fluids. Subsequently, the unit will discuss the concept of fractional flow and Buckley-Leverett Theory and elaborate on how the end results may be analytically extended and upscaled to more realistic multidimensional/heterogeneous systems. Finally, an overview of the uncertainties to consider while attempting to forecast the performance of a fluid-fluid displacement in porous media over the intermediate to long term will be presented.
