About this Unit

The subsurface environment has a crucial role in addressing the challenges of the energy transition in terms of both non-hydrocarbon resources exploration and storage solutions. Porous media characterisation is the process of analysing and describing the physical properties of materials that have interconnected void spaces. The objectives of this unit are for students to become familiar with petrophysical conditions favourable for resources exploration, energy storage, assessment of geothermal sites for heat production; and for petrophysical evaluation of the CO2 and other wastes storage sites. This unit will provide most of the essential parameters required for the characterisation of subsurface porous media using logging tools including an introduction to porous media, identification of the type of porous media, storage capacity estimation, pore size distribution & surface area, capillary pressure, injectivity and deliverability assessment, porous media mechanical properties calculations, volumetric calculations, and uncertainty analysis.
