About this Unit

Engineering electromagnetics is a fundamental branch of electrical engineering that combines physical reasoning and mathematical analysis to describe and explain the behaviour of key electrical quantities and components such as voltage, current, resistors, capacitors and inductors. While circuit theory enables us to calculate system-level responses, electromagnetics reveals the physical principles that govern component behaviour. You will learn how capacitors store energy in electric fields, how inductors store energy in magnetic fields, and how time-varying fields lead to coupling between electric and magnetic phenomena. These principles will be applied to the analysis of transmission lines, the transfer of power and information and the propagation of electromagnetic waves, the foundation of wireless communication and sensing technologies. To support your learning, the unit incorporates programming exercises to visualise complex equations, hands-on experiments using industry-standard measurement equipment and specialised electromagnetic simulation software to design and analyse matching networks. These tools will deepen your conceptual understanding and provide valuable practical skills aligned with professional engineering practice.
