About this Unit

Introduction of data link layer networks, including the data link layer service, data link layer addressing, ARP protocol, switching concepts and operations, self-learning of forwarding table, filtering, forwarding and flooding of switch operation, virtual LAN (VLAN) concept, and inter -VLAN routing. Spanning tree algorithm, and etherchannel forming. Dynamic host configuration, includes Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) version 4, SLAAC and DHCPv6, and first hop redundancy protocol (FHRP) for reliability improvement. Data link layer and network layer security risks and mitigations. Network layer routing mechanisms, including the static and dynamic routing. Dynamic routing algorithms, including unicast routing algorithms like link state routing, distance vector routing, OSPF, RIP, BGP, and multicast routing like Reverse path forwarding (RPF) and center-based trees, DVMRP, PIM. Quality-of-service (QoS) support of internet, including packet classification, scheduling, active queue management. Emerging technologies, including network virtualization and network automation, like cloud computing, software-defined networks (SDN), and application programming interfaces (API).
