About this Unit

Enzymatic and receptor assays are an essential part of medical diagnosis, drug discovery and the biological sciences more broadly. This is a laboratory-focused unit, in which students will design an enzymatic assay and develop appropriate inhibitors. The key topics covered in this unit are: Advanced peptide chemistry; The use of absorbance and fluorescence in assays; Practical enzyme kinetics; Inhibitor modes of action and kinetics; Visualisation ligand-protein binding; and Inhibition assays. The laboratory will consist of both individual work and team experiments.
