About this Unit

This unit provides students with an understanding of good national leadership as something that is both ethical and competent. It will draw on the fields of normative and applied ethics, philosophy, professional ethics, management theory, and classical thinking about the nature of well exercised authority. A particular emphasis is placed on political and military leadership and the modern moral dilemmas faced by statespersons. It examines issues such as the roots of ethical leadership, authenticity and virtue, notions of the common good, the importance of public values and the private morality of leaders.
