About this Unit

Satellite Earth Observation (EO) is used across most Earth science disciplines and their applications to real-world issues, from oceanography to meteorology, climate science, geophysics, ecology, forestry, agriculture, mining and many more. The wealth of information that the panoply of EO techniques provides allows addressing Earth system science as well as developing applications that can serve many economically significant Industries that rely on accurate and consistent information about the environment. This unit will provide an understanding of the basics of EO technology and applications. It will introduce fundamental concepts and theories underpinning EO, data capturing techniques and extraction of information from versatile satellite observations, and then will demonstrate application of EO to map and monitor Earth terrestrial and aquatic environments. The knowledge you will get from lectures and the skills learnt in your practicals will be applicable to multiple aforementioned disciplines.
