About this Unit

This unit introduces the applications of surveying and geographic information systems (GIS) methods to mining. Students will be introduced to key surveying techniques used in open cut and underground mining environments. The unit explores the role of the mine surveyor in underground control, supporting unmanned machine guidance systems, and the application of satellite positioning technologies. Students will gain hands-on experience by collecting and processing surveying data, including levelling and traversing, using instruments and methods simulated for a mine site environment. Students will be also introduced to the fundamentals of GIS and its use in analysing, processing, and presenting data collected by surveying and other mapping techniques. This will entail utilising GIS software for data processing, input and representation of data, storage and manipulation of geospatial data, and data dissemination with maps. Students will also develop their collaborative and communication skills through fieldwork activities.
