About this Unit

In this unit students will learn skills in research and assessment of climate change and health using big data. It gives students the training to understand health impact assessments of climate change. Data analysis skills will be taught using big data repositories of spatiotemporal gridded data on historical climate variables (i.e. heat, water resources, air pollution) and future projections under climate change scenarios. Statistical association modelling is used to estimate baseline risks using exposure modelling linked with health and population data. Evidence of the risks of impacts will be assessed in terms of at-risk populations such as Indigenous communities and disadvantaged socio economic groups. Students will explore case studies involving mortality, malaria and mental health. They will practice visualisation and strategies to communicate complex climate and health information for climate action plans by policy and research stakeholders.
