Evolution of epidemiology. Dynamic interaction between agent, host, and environment. Concepts of health and disease. The natural history of disease. Estimating health and disease in populations. Demography. Concepts of risk factors and causes. Validity and reliability of data. Epidemiological study designs, their strengths and limitations, inference and causation, bias and confounding, issues of reliability and validity, properties of rates and ratios, age standardisation procedures and application of epidemiological knowledge, principles and techniques to investigate public health issues.
