About this Unit

In this unit, the relationship between the microstructure of metals and other materials and their mechanical properties is studied. Following this, the control of material microstructures in order to control the mechanical properties of metals is investigated, including mechanical testing, strain hardening and annealing, solidification strengthening, solid solution and dispersion strengthening, as well as strengthening by phase transformation and heat treatment. In addition, corrosion, wear and static and dynamic failure of metals are investigated. Finally, ferrous and non-ferrous metal alloys and their roles in industry and society are treated in more depth.
