About this Unit

This unit will cover three important Metallurgical Engineering concepts - kinetics, interfaces, and electrolyte. Kinetics determines the rate of reactions such as leaching, roasting and precipitation used in Process and Resource Engineering. This unit introduces homogeneous kinetics, activation energy, collision and transition state theories. Interfaces are important in the study of flotation, ore wetting, solvent extraction, etc. Specifically, surface tension, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces, adsorption of gaseous and soluble species on solids, solid-liquid interfaces and three phase systems will be covered. Electrolytes are important as they influence the efficiency of electrowinning, leaching, liquid-liquid separation, and many other processes. The importance of electrolytes will be examined focusing on ionic interactions and activities including the concepts of conductance of electrolytes and transference numbers
