About this Unit

Fundamental principles of electron microscopy and x-ray analysis. This will include fundamentals of the interaction of electrons with solids, theoretical and practical understanding of scanning electron microscopes (SEM), transmission electron microscopes (TEM), energy dispersive x-ray analysis. Sample preparation, operational modes, image analysis and signal processing. The advantages and disadvantages of different types of instruments. X-Ray topics will include x-ray fundamentals, absorption of x-rays, x-ray analysis, wavelength effects and relevant techniques. Theory of diffraction of x-rays and details of modern x-ray diffractometers. Introduction to crystallography, crystal structure, Bravais lattices, Miller indices. Phase identification and quantitative analysis.
