About this Unit

This unit begins with a discussion of crystal structures and principles of bonding in the four main types of solids. Finite temperature effects are introduced via the Heat Capacity of the Free Electron Gas. Using the reciprocal lattice, the principle of Bragg scattering is generalised. Substantial effort is devoted to solving the periodic Schroedinger Equation within the Kronig-Penney model. From this, band theory is applied to optical and electrical properties, including the phenomenon of holes. The unit concludes with a study of the lattice vibration theory of phonons.
