About this Unit

An introduction to sociological and anthropological perspectives on health, wellbeing illness and disability in society; understanding the contribution of the biomedical and social models of health for transdisciplinary practice for nurses, midwives and allied health: professionals. Incorporating contemporary, historical, social and cultural perspectives in local and global contexts to identify social determinants of health. Understanding traditional healing and other healing practices within a diverse community to cultural safe, secure and competent care, which is necessary to build individual and community empowerment. Recognising the impact of gender, sexuality, disability, migration, being a refugee, internally displaced person or member of any marginalised population on health. Evaluating humanitarian health care delivery and disaster relief within a human rights and social justice framework to support community development in national and international settings.
