About this Unit

The environment of space, both in orbit and on planetary surfaces imposes challenges for the design and operation of spacecraft. This unit explores and describes the space and planetary environments of the Solar System, and then uses these environments to look at the factors and challenges of operating in space, and some of the practical methods used to successfully explore. This will cover a detailed overview of planetary environmental factors and the conditions in the space environment, such as factors like temperature, radiation etc. This will include the space weather phenomena, describe the origin in the context of the Sun and consider the array of destructive environmental effects the space environment causes on spacecraft, instrumentation and/or planetary bodies. This leads to discussion of practical spacecraft considerations, such as testing, design for redundancy and an analysis of some notable past failures. By looking at example spacecraft that must deal with a wide range of conditions, the learning outcomes will involve a fuller understanding of planetary and space conditions. This subject will extend into human environmental factors and needs for exploration and operations, and the technologies used to allow humans to live in space, and conclude by looking at future programs to return humans to the Moon and possible resource exploitation strategies that might be used.
