About this Unit

Astrobiology is a multidisciplinary study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe. This unit explores: a) the ingredients and conditions for life to emerge on the early Earth through investigations of ancient rock samples, geochemistry and habitats of microbial life and b) the search for life elsewhere in the solar system, and on exoplanets, through astronomical observations and solar system space missions. Laboratory activities include, but are not limited to, hands-on investigation of ancient rock samples and a virtual field trip to search for traces of ancient life and its habitats. The final activity will be group planning for a space mission to search for signs of life on Mars. This is a multidisciplinary STEM unit with opportunities to study individually and in a group through laboratory activities, presentations, and reports.
