About this Unit

Space has captured the human imagination for millennia, from the earliest use of stars for navigation through to planning to put the first human on Mars. This unit introduces the underlying concepts of space exploration, and the scientific, technical and social drivers of the space industry. Students will explore the solar system from the Sun, terrestrial and outer planets and moons, asteroids, comets, and beyond. We will cover the history of human and robotic space exploration, including the scientific objectives, payload considerations and earth and space-based approaches. We explore relationship between science, technology and industry, looking at how space science leads to technical advancements that spin out into innovations across a range of sectors on Earth. The unit supports students in understanding how space exploration exists in a social context, including economic factors and political and cultural drivers. The ethics of space exploration will be considered, including multi-cultural and Indigenous perceptions of and cultural connections to the night sky, and the need for responsible exploration, embedding sustainability principles.
