About this Unit

This unit provides students with a comprehensive and practical understanding of the range of impacts that mining may have on society and the environment. Broadly, the unit covers the concept of mining and sustainability; responses of government, industry and private firms to the sustainability agenda; environmental management in mining (including water, waste, acid and metalliferous drainage, and mine closure planning); social and cultural issues in mining, and best practice for environmental and social impacts of mining. Students will acquire an understanding of state-of-the-art techniques in environmental management of mine sites as well as being able to identify the major issues and management strategies associated with social/community engagement and impacts, particularly in relation to Indigenous communities in Australia and internationally. Students’ communication and collaborative skills will also be developed in this unit. Students will also be required to participate in fieldwork activities and industry based problem solving.
