About this Unit

Governed principally by treaties on trade, investment and international monetary system, International Economic Law regulates the international business and economic relations among nations and between foreign businesses and states. It is an area of intense international disputes between or among states and between foreign investors and states. Thus, International Economic Law is an area of practical relevance both in terms of the substantive protections it affords to states and foreign businesses and the mechanisms for the resolution of trade and investment disputes. Broadly structured in three parts, the unit first explores the historical and normative foundations of international trade law, culminating in an examination of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). It then shifts to international investment law, assessing its architecture, dispute resolution mechanisms, and current reform efforts. The final part addresses the global financial architecture, with a focus on institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, sovereign debt governance, and emerging issues like crypto assets and digital currencies.
