About this Unit

In this unit, students will examine the principles and practice of human rights law in Australia against the backdrop of international and regional human rights law systems. Students will be introduced to the origins, theoretical underpinnings, and critiques of human rights law. They will also be introduced to the sources and mechanisms of international and regional human rights law, and to the application of these sources and mechanisms in Australia. Building on these foundational concepts, students will focus on select topics of contemporary relevance to human rights law in Australia, such as the protection of human rights of Indigenous Australians, children, women, asylum-seekers, and migrant workers, as well as human rights as they apply in the context of business and counter-terrorism.
