About this Unit

This unit is a legal skills unit, which is designed to develop legal research and written and oral communication and advocacy skills. This unit will also help those students wishing to become involved in local, national and international mooting competitions to develop the skills necessary for participation. Students will participate in a number of workshops and seminars on various aspect of mooting. They will also undertake a ‘short’ moot assignment to develop and reflect upon their advocacy skills before moving on to work as part of a team to develop written submissions for an appeal concerning a complex legal scenario. These written submissions will require detailed and strategic research into the relevant grounds of the appeal and will form the basis of arguments that the students, as part of a team, will advance before a simulated appellate court on behalf of their team’s client. The unit will also facilitate students’ engagement with the profession, through guest lectures, networking and other associated opportunities.
