About this Unit

This unit explores the (re)emergence of extremist thought and influence in contemporary global affairs. It begins by examining periods in 20th century international politics, with particular focus on understanding the causal factors behind the extremism periods during this timeframe. With this information in hand, it then turns to growing extremist challenges witnessed today including new forms of ethnonationalism, populism, conspiracy theory and conspirituality, neomasculine anti-feminism, and other forms of militant neoreaction. Emphasis is placed on understanding the underlying material, economic and sociological influences driving this resurgence: including the impacts of social media and other forms of communications technology; globalisation; growing ecological and environmental degradation; shifting cultural, racial, religious and gender norms; and the long-term impacts of neoliberal capitalism. Students will finish the unit with an understanding of the complex interrelations of these various factors and their role in driving political extremism, as well as how they as individuals and members of society can confront this challenge.
