About this Unit

This unit introduces students to Australia’s global positioning in the international political system and develops critical analysis of the influences, interests, processes and policies that shape Australia’s international relations. Students will examine the factors that frame Australia’s national identity and national interests, including its strategic geography, natural resources, economic profile, socio-cultural values, and political system, and then explore how foreign policy is made and implemented through Australia’s political, bureaucratic and diplomatic machinery. The unit will explore Australia’s key bilateral and regional relationships, such as with the USA, China, India, and ASEAN, as well as its engagement with the wider systems of global governance, including the United Nations. The unit will examine Australia’s policies and positions in international negotiations on major issues such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, conflict resolution, inequality, international trade, and Indigenous rights.
