About this Unit

This unit considers optimisation problems arising in the industry. The students will learn the necessary skills to model the problems mathematically and solve them using operations research techniques. The unit focuses on the industry problems that can be formulated as integer programming models. The topics covered include problem formulation, solution methods, and the use of a mathematical solver.1- Problem formulation: Formulating business problems (such as facility location, production planning, workforce scheduling and supply chain) as integer programming models.2- Solution methods: Simplex, dual simplex, simplex method for upper-bounded variables, branch and bound, and cutting planes.3- Solver implementation: Python and one integer programming solver such as CBC, Gurobi, or Cplex.
