About this Unit

This unit deals with the study of the Cold War from a global perspective, spanning the end of the Second World War in 1945 to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. It examines the ideological, political, social, economic and cultural dimensions of the Cold War across the world. By studying this unit, students develop the ability to critically analyse how historians and historical actors have interpreted and responded to the Cold War and its effects over time. By exploring the Cold War as a global phenomenon, playing out in Asia, Latin America, the Pacific, Africa as well as Europe and Australia, students will gain insights into recent developments in historical writing and research on this topic. Finally, the unit discusses the Cold War’s legacies on global politics today.
