About this Unit

This unit examines the modern political history of the Middle East from the late Ottoman Empire to the present and the region’s global significance. It traces the effects of colonialism, authoritarianism and democratisation on the region. Students who complete the unit will develop a broad understanding of the historical forces that have shaped the Middle East and North Africa. In so doing, students will also gain a strong understanding of some of the key phenomena in the region, such as the tensions between Arab Nationalism and Islamism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and militant Islam.
