About this Unit

This unit examines movements for social change in Australia from the 19th century to the present. Students will learn how major phenomena such as war, migration, industrialisation, and political and economic struggles changed Australian society. Students will also gain an understanding of how global developments influenced Australia, as well as Australia’s contribution to social change internationally. From environmental protection to movements for peace, racial equality, women’s suffrage, and LGBTIQ+ rights, this unit looks at processes of change, including the role of contentious politics and responses of the state to a changing Australia. By examining primary sources as well as scholarly analysis of movements for social change, students will learn skills in source analysis and historical interpretation.
