About this Unit

In this unit students will be introduced to the scope and limits of physiotherapy and the notion of professional and ethical practice. They will explore and practice the development of a therapeutic alliance through safe person-centred therapeutic touch and respectful communication. There will be a strong focus on developing empathetic communication skills, in particular the skill of listening with understanding. The concepts of biopsychosocial frameworks of care will be introduced. Students will be introduced to clinical reasoning as a problem-solving process, applying simple assessment and management strategies. Blended learning (online and face to face) and practical classes will be based around several vignettes of patients followed through their hospital stay. This will introduce students to the scope of movement problems and how to apply effective therapeutic touch and manual strategies to assist functional movement recovery. Students will also start to engage in reflective practice, providing self and peer feedback in order to build agency in learning.
