About this Unit

This is the final bioscience unit in the paramedicine curriculum, designed to bring together students’ understanding of clinical theory and management principles. Like previous units, this unit takes an integrated, systems-based approach to learning, where pathophysiology, diagnostic strategies, and pharmacology are taught concurrently through their application to real-world case studies. Students will begin by consolidating their biomedical knowledge with patient-centred and culturally safe care to address obstetric conditions commonly managed by paramedics. Building on this foundation, they will apply their cumulative knowledge to complex and/or less frequently encountered clinical cases. Emphasis is placed on discussing the aetiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of conditions commonly managed by paramedics, selecting and interpreting diagnostic strategies, and understanding pharmacotherapeutics and the quality use of medicines. Students will apply the critical thinking skills developed throughout their studies to critically appraise primary evidence and clinical standards, focusing on how these align with or challenge current paramedic practice to develop evidence-based, person-centred, and culturally safe management strategies.
