About this Unit

In this unit, clinical cases and patient scenarios provide context for learning foundational concepts in biomedical and clinical sciences using a body systems-based approach. The relationship between human structure and function in health and adaptive physiological responses to changes in the internal and external environment are explored. The unit introduces clinical consultation and the doctor-patient relationship with a focus on developing effective communication and history-taking skills. Basic examination and procedural skills are introduced and interpreted within the context of the clinical consult in a healthy individual.Students explore health advocacy, health behaviours, health promotion and social determinants of health, promoting a holistic patient-centred approach to health in society. Students develop a broad understanding of Aboriginal culture and the specific impact of colonisation on health outcomes in Aboriginal people and communities. This unit serves as the foundation for the study of medicine and equips students with the necessary skills as they adjust to both the university and medical school learning environment and begin to develop their individual professional identities as current medical students and future doctors in society.
