About this Unit

Sedimentary basins record the deformation of the lithosphere. Their structural and stratigraphic architecture reflects the sedimentary response to their tectonic setting, the geodynamic processes responsible for their formation, their structural evolution and changes in climate and sea level. However, as sedimentary basins are a result of subsidence and sediment accumulation, most of their record occurs in the sub-surface. In this unit, we learn to interpret the main sources of subsurface information (core data, well log data, seismic data) and we will apply that to understanding the formation of sedimentary basins in rifts, passive margins, compressional, strike-slip and intra-cratonic settings. Sedimentary basins also contain important resources, so we will consider how our understanding of basin evolution can help us evaluate potential energy reserves (hydrocarbons, natural hydrogen) and storage (underground hydrogen storage, gas storage, carbon capture and storage).
