About this Unit

Ore deposits provide essential raw materials for the net zero transition and economic livelihoods worldwide. In this unit, students are introduced to the principal types of ore deposits and the processes of ore formation. Magmatic, hydrothermal and sedimentary deposits are investigated through the use of deposit models and other techniques from mineral exploration, research and mining geology. A special emphasis is placed on commodities relevant to the energy transition and high-tech applications. Lecture topics are examined in parallel in the practical component, which employs traditional reflected light microscopy for the identification of ore minerals, ore textures and associations, but also modern tools available to resource geologists.
