About this Unit

This unit introduces the student to the geochemical principles underlying the ecosphere and the impact human activity has on it. Areas of study include an introduction to the matter/nutrient cycle in different environmental compartments, followed by a discussion of the diverse manifestations of matter disequilibria caused by human activities (acid rain, ozone hole, eutrophication). Another fundamental part of this unit is a quantitative geochemical examination of environmental contamination illustrated with examples from water pollution, acid mine drainage, tailings dams and their failure, heavy metals and toxicity, and contaminant transport. By covering these subjects, the unit actively embeds United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) (good health), SDG6 (clean water), SDG14 (life below water), and SDG15 (life on land) as core content. Discipline based problem solving with data analysis, interpretation and evaluation will extend fundamental knowledge in environmental geoscience.
