About this Unit

Students will learn to describe and classify of igneous and metamorphic rocks in hand specimen and thin section. We will cover the generation of primary magmas in the mantle and crust, the mechanisms by which those magmas are emplaced as intrusions and lavas, and the processes that lead to magmatic differentiation. Students will learn how to interpret igneous and metamorphic rocks through the use of simple phase diagrams and the role of whole-rock chemistry, temperature and pressure on mineral assemblages, with implications for constraining tectonic settings.
